Operation Seagull

Earlier this year, I was talking cinema with my good friend, and raconteur, JF. During the discussion, the works of Steven Seagal came up and, to my shame, I realised that I’d never seen any of his films. How could I, a child of the ’80s, get to my thirties and never see any of the work of “action movie actor, producer, writer, director, martial artist, philanthropist, guitarist, singer-songwriter, energy drink entrepreneur, [...] deputy sheriff (wiki)” and fastest hands in the West?

Being the kind hearted soul that he is, JF passed me his copy of Seagal’s Magnum Opus; Half Past Dead. I eventually built up the courage to watch it and, well, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was so stunned by what I saw that I had to watch the film again, with director’s commentary, the following evening. So many questions filled my mind. Why? What? Really? What? How? Why? And so on.

Since then, I have made it my mission to watch every Steven Seagal film ever made. I’ve managed to get a few in since – the extraordinary Kill Switch being a notable example – but I plan to watch each film and live blog the experience. I’ll make sure my plans are publicised on Twitter so you can join in if you wish. If you can’t make it then, well, that’s what comments are for.
